Press-On Nails for Dental and Food Workers in Australia: What the Rules Say

Sep 28, 2026
Cameo Nude press-on nails by L'Adele, a soft nude for days off

If you work in a dental practice or a cafe kitchen, you have probably stood in front of the mirror on a Sunday night, looked at your bare nails and wondered whether you could get away with a set of press-ons on Monday. We would rather give you the honest answer than a hopeful one.

The short version: not at work, and yes on your days off. Below is what the guidelines and food safety advice actually say, why the rules exist, and how to make press-ons fit around a roster.

Dental work: what the guidelines say

Australian dental practices build their infection prevention and control manuals around the Australian Dental Association's Guidelines for Infection Prevention and Control, Fifth Edition (2024). Each practice writes its own manual, so the details can differ, but the hand hygiene section is clear about nails.

The guidelines say: "Each dental practice needs a clear policy statement within its IPC manual regarding the need for clinical staff to keep their nails both short and natural."

They go further: "Wearing nail polish, artificial fingernails or fingernail extenders is not permitted, as these cause larger amounts of microorganisms to be retained on the hands, particularly around the nail beds, despite hand hygiene."

And on length: "Keeping nails short also prevents them from puncturing gloves and makes hand hygiene easier to perform."

Why it matters in a clinic

It is not about looks. As the guidelines explain, polish and artificial nails mean more germs stay on the hands, particularly around the nail beds, even with good hand hygiene. Long nails can also puncture gloves, which is a problem for you and the patient.

So for clinical roles, whether you are a dental assistant, hygienist, dental nurse or dentist, the answer is a plain no. Press-on nails are artificial nails, and they fall under that rule.

Food handling: what the rules say

In Australia, the national Food Standards Code requires food handlers to take all practicable measures so that anything they wear does not contaminate food. State food authorities and local councils then turn that into everyday advice for cafes, kitchens and bakeries.

The Victorian Department of Health's DoFoodSafely site is a good example. Its list of things food handlers should not do includes:

  • "wear artificial nails as they can fall off into the food"
  • "wear nail polish, as it can chip off into food. You also won't be able to see if your nails are clean"

Its list of things to do includes: "keep your nails short and clean".

Why it matters in a kitchen

A nail that pops off during a busy breakfast rush is not something anyone wants to find in a toastie. Even a well applied set takes knocks from hot pans, hot water and constant hand washing. Colour on the nail also makes it harder to spot dirt underneath. House rules differ from one workplace to the next, so check your employer's own policy, but the advice we found all points the same way: short, natural and clean.

The honest answer

We make handmade soft gel press-on nails, so it would be easy to tell you they will be fine at work. They will not be, in a clinic or around food. If you handle patients or unwrapped, ready-to-eat food, leave them off for the shift. We would rather you kept your good standing at work than took a risk for a nicer manicure.

The good news is that press-ons are made for exactly this kind of life. You wear them when you are off the clock, and take them off when work comes back around. If you are a nurse rather than a dental worker, we have written a separate guide on the same topic: bare below the elbows and press-on nails in Australia.

Making it work around your shifts

A few things that make the on and off routine easy:

  • Keep your natural nails short underneath. Short natural nails are what your workplace wants to see anyway, and press-ons sit neatly over them.
  • Take them off the evening before a shift. Do not leave it until the morning rush. Warm soapy water loosens them gently. There is no acetone, no drill and no lamp involved, and it takes only a few minutes.
  • Do not wear them under gloves at work. Gloves do not make press-ons acceptable in dental clinical work, and short natural nails are also what stops gloves from tearing.
  • Put them on when you finish your last shift of the week. Each set goes on in about ten minutes, and the box includes 150 adhesive tabs, a nail file, a cuticle pusher and 5 alcohol wipes.
  • Keep the set for next time. Our sets are reusable, so you can wear the same one again next weekend.
  • Get your size right first. Each set has 10 nails plus 5 spares in your size (XS, S, M or L). If you fall between two sizes, take the larger. Our size guide walks you through measuring.

Looks that suit a quick weekend switch

For a quick weekend switch you probably want something soft and easy to live with. Our handmade soft gel sets come in Round, Oval Short, Square Short and Oval Long shapes. For a subtle look that still feels a bit special, these shades work well:

  • Cameo Nude
  • Vincent's Blossom
  • Mashmellow
  • Gentle Perfection
  • Rosy Dew
  • Dusty Rose
  • Classic French, a soft pink base with a crisp white tip

If you like a polished, neutral finish for other parts of your life, such as meetings or dinners out, have a look at our nude nails for work collection.

Questions we often get

Can I wear press-ons under gloves?

Not in dental clinical work. Gloves do not change the rule, and the ADA guidelines specifically say artificial fingernails are not permitted for clinical staff. In food handling, your employer's policy decides. The Victorian advice above simply says not to wear artificial nails, and that is the safest way to treat it.

Does reception or front of house count?

It depends. Front desk and reception roles may have different rules from clinical staff, and a cafe front counter is not the same as a kitchen. We do not want to guess for you, so ask your practice manager or employer what the policy says before you wear a set to work.

Will taking them on and off every week damage my nails?

Press-ons come off gently in warm soapy water with no acetone, no drill and no lamp. Keep your natural nails short and look after your cuticles, and a weekly on and off should be comfortable. For more on how long a set lasts, read our guide on how long press-on nails last. A set typically lasts 1 to 2 weeks, about 10 days on average.

How long does delivery take?

Delivery to Australia takes about 7 business days, and there are no import charges to pay on delivery. If your set is unused and you got the size wrong, you can exchange it within 14 days. You pay the postage to send it back to us. Full details are on our delivery and exchanges page.

The bottom line

In a dental clinic or a kitchen, keep your nails short, natural and bare. On your days off, press-ons are a lovely way to enjoy a nicer manicure without any damage or fuss. Check your own workplace policy, plan your removal the night before, and enjoy the weekend.
