Short answer: a set of L'Adele press-on nails stays on for 1 to 2 weeks, about 10 days on average, with the adhesive tabs that come in the box. The longer answer depends on what your hands get up to. An Australian summer throws a few extra things at your nails: heat, sweat, sunscreen, the pool and the surf. None of them are deal breakers, but they do change how you prep and wear your set. Here's what actually makes the difference.
How long press-on nails last, realistically
With clean, dry nails and a firm press, you can expect 1 to 2 weeks per wear. Someone who works at a desk and wears gloves for the dishes will sit at the top of that range. Someone who swims every morning, works with her hands or washes them twenty times a day will be nearer the bottom. That is normal, and it's why we give you enough tabs to reapply many times over rather than promising a number that only holds in a lab.
Does the heat make press-on nails fall off?
Heat by itself isn't the enemy; oil and water are. On a hot day your skin produces more sweat and oil, and most of us are topping up sunscreen and hand cream. Any film of oil on the nail stops the tab gripping properly, which is why a set applied after sunscreen can let go within a day or two. Humidity works the same way: if there is moisture on the nail when you apply, the tab never gets a proper hold.
The fix is all in the order you do things:
- Apply your nails first, then your sunscreen and hand cream, never the other way round.
- Wipe every nail with an alcohol wipe just before you apply, even if they look clean. There are five in every box.
- Apply somewhere cool, out of the sun, and give your hands a minute to stop sweating before you start.
- Press each nail for about 30 seconds, pushing from the cuticle towards the tip so no air stays trapped under the tab.
- Keep your hands out of water for the first hour, so the tabs can settle before your first swim or shower.
Can you swim with press-on nails?
Yes. A quick dip in the pool or the ocean is fine. What shortens wear time is long soaks: an afternoon in the surf, hours in the pool with the kids, or a long hot bath. Water slowly softens the adhesive from the edges inwards. If you know you've got a big beach day coming, pop a fresh tab on any nail that feels loose the night before, and dry your hands properly afterwards rather than letting them air dry.
Tabs, not liquid glue
Our sets come with 150 adhesive tabs, enough for fifteen full applications. Tabs hold well for everyday wear and, just as importantly, they come off without damaging your own nails. That is what makes the set reusable. We don't sell liquid nail glue, and we'd rather you didn't use it with our nails: it is much harder on your natural nails when you take them off.
How to take press-on nails off without damage
- Soak your fingertips in warm water with a little soap for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Gently lift one side of the nail with the cuticle pusher from your box. If it resists, soak a little longer.
- Never pull or prise a nail off while it is still stuck; that is how the top layer of your own nail gets damaged.
- Peel any leftover tab off the back of the press-on nail and let it dry fully.
Wearing your set again
Because our nails are handmade in soft gel, they are flexible and strong enough to wear again and again. Once they are dry and clean, store them back in the box in finger order so the next application takes a couple of minutes. Next time, just use fresh tabs and the same prep as before.
Five habits that add days to every set
- Wear gloves for the dishes and for cleaning.
- Use the pads of your fingers, not your nails, to open cans, lids and car doors.
- Dry your hands properly after swimming or washing up.
- Get your size right: a nail that fits flush lasts far longer than one with a gap at the side. Our press-on nail size guide shows you how to measure.
- Fix a loose nail straight away with a fresh tab instead of waiting until it falls off.
Frequently asked questions
Do press-on nails last longer than a gel manicure?
A salon gel manicure usually lasts longer in one go. Press-on nails win on flexibility: they're on in ten minutes, off whenever you like, and you can wear the same set again for the next event without another salon booking.
Will sunscreen ruin my press-on nails?
Not once they're on. Sunscreen only causes trouble if it's on your nails when you apply them. Apply your nails first, then your sunscreen.
Can I wear press-on nails to the beach?
Absolutely. Expect a slightly shorter wear time if you spend hours in the water, and take a couple of spare tabs with you if you're away for the weekend.
How many times can I reuse a set?
That depends on how carefully you take them off and store them. With gentle removal and fresh tabs, you can wear the same set many times, and your box has enough tabs for fifteen applications.
How quickly will my set arrive in Australia?
Delivery to Australia takes about 7 business days, with no import charges to pay on delivery, so order a little ahead of a wedding, formal or holiday. Delivery, exchanges and payment are all explained on our press-on nails in Australia page.
