Nurses and press-on nails in Canada: what the hand hygiene rules say, and how to wear them on your days off

Sep 28, 2026

If you work in patient care in Canada, you've probably already had this conversation with yourself: you love a fresh set of press-on nails, but your unit has rules about nails at work. The good news is you don't have to choose between the two. You just have to be honest about what press-on nails actually are, know what the hand hygiene guidance says, and plan your sets around your shifts instead of wearing them through them. Below you'll find what the guidance says, and how nurses and other care workers wear press-on nails on their days off.

Why press-on nails aren't worn during patient care

This isn't a L'Adele house rule. It comes from the infection prevention and control guidance that Canadian healthcare workplaces follow. IPAC Canada, the national body for infection prevention and control, puts it plainly in its hand hygiene practice recommendations:

"Health care workers (HCW) providing patient care and others should not wear artificial nails or nail enhancements/nail art, including but not limited to acrylic gel nails and wraps. These have been associated with increased glove tears, transfer of microorganisms, and outbreaks of infection."

Source: IPAC Canada, Practice Recommendations for Hand Hygiene in Health Care Settings.

In Alberta, the provincial health authority spells out the same standard for its own staff:

"Artificial nails and/or nail enhancements (e.g., fibreglass or silk wraps, decals, rhinestones, gel polish), shall not be worn by AHS peoples who provide direct patient care."

Source: Alberta Health Services, Artificial Nails in the Healthcare Environment.

The reasoning is the same in both: artificial nails of every kind, whether acrylic, gel, a wrap or a press-on, are linked to more glove tears and to microorganisms being passed on. In a clinical setting that's a real infection prevention issue, and it's not something we can talk our way around.

Let's be honest about what counts

Press-on nails are artificial nails. There is no version of "but mine are different" that changes that, no matter how thin, soft gel, or well made a set is. If a policy says no artificial nails or nail enhancements for anyone providing direct patient care, that covers press-ons too, alongside acrylics, hard gel, and dip powder. We would rather tell you this clearly than have you assume press-ons are exempt and end up in an awkward conversation with your manager or your infection control team.

The exact rule depends on your province and your employer

Hand hygiene guidance in Canada is published nationally by bodies like IPAC Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada, but it gets implemented locally. Every province, health authority, hospital, and clinic writes its own policy on top of that guidance, and the details can differ, including which roles are covered and how nail polish is treated. Before you plan anything around your own nails, check your own workplace policy or ask your infection prevention and control lead. This article is general information based on published guidance, not medical advice, and it's not a substitute for your employer's actual policy.

How to wear press-on nails around your shifts

None of this means press-on nails are off the table for you; it just means the timing matters. Here's how to make it work.

Put them on after your last shift

Wait until you've finished your last shift in a stretch, then apply your set. With L'Adele's adhesive tabs, applying a full set takes about 10 minutes. There's no UV lamp involved and no drying time, so you can do it the evening you get home and wear them right away for your days off, a trip, or an event.

Take them off before your next shift

Before you're back on the floor, remove them. Soak your nails in warm, soapy water and let the tabs loosen on their own, then gently lift the set off. Don't pull or pry; that's how natural nails get damaged. It takes a few minutes, and because the set comes off intact, you can put it back on with a fresh tab next time you're off again. In between, keep your own nails short and clean, exactly as the hand hygiene guidance asks.

If your schedule is unpredictable, keep your sets for stretches where you know you have a few days off in a row, rather than for single evenings, so you have time to actually enjoy them.

Which sets work best for this

For anyone wearing press-ons around clinical shifts, we would point you toward the shorter shapes. Round and Oval Short both sit close to the fingertip, which tends to feel more practical once your own nails take over again on shift. A soft, neutral nude tone also means the set looks polished without standing out, on or off duty. Browse those shapes, along with our other handmade soft gel sets, in the Everyday & Business collection.

Getting the size and the timing right

Every L'Adele set is handmade in soft gel, one set at a time, with 10 nails plus 5 spares in your chosen size, so getting the size right on the first try matters. Our sizing guide for Canada walks you through measuring at home, and if in doubt, we always recommend sizing up and filing the sides down rather than sizing down. Our guide to how long press-on nails last covers wear time: generally one to two weeks, averaging around 10 days, and a bit shorter if your hands are in water a lot. That's worth knowing if you're planning sets around a work schedule.

Delivery in Canada

We ship across Canada in about 7 business days, and duties and taxes are prepaid, so there's nothing extra to pay on delivery. If you're planning a set around specific days off, order with that lead time in mind rather than leaving it to the last minute. See our full range for Canada, including sizes and shapes, on our Canada page. If a set isn't the right size, you can exchange an unused set within 14 days in our returns centre. You pay the return shipping and we send the new size free of charge.

FAQ

Can I wear press-on nails at work if I am not doing direct patient care?

Some workplaces draw the line at direct patient care; others apply nail policies more broadly to anyone on a clinical unit. This varies by employer, so check your own workplace policy, and ask your infection prevention and control team if you're not sure where you fall.

Do short, thin press-ons count as artificial nails too?

Yes. The guidance doesn't make an exception for thinner or shorter artificial nails; it covers artificial nails and nail enhancements as a category, which includes press-ons alongside acrylics and gels.

How do I remove a set quickly before an early shift?

Soak your nails in warm, soapy water until the adhesive tabs loosen, then lift the set off gently rather than pulling. It typically takes a few minutes, and the set stays intact so you can reapply it with a new tab later.

Will my press-ons survive being taken off and put back on for every stretch of days off?

Yes, that's exactly how they're meant to be used. Each set comes with 150 adhesive tabs in the box, so you can remove and reapply the same set, as long as removal is gentle rather than forced.

Trouvez votre taille

Comment mesurer votre ongle
