Can You Wear Press-On Nails in Food Service? What the Food Code Says

Sep 28, 2026

Short answer: if you handle exposed food, only with intact gloves on, and many restaurants and coffee chains do not allow them at all. The FDA Food Code, which most states use as the basis for their food safety rules, treats press-on nails as artificial fingernails. Here is what the rule says, where the gray areas are, and how to enjoy press-ons on your days off without any trouble at work.

What the Food Code says

Two short sections of the FDA Food Code cover fingernails. Section 2-302.11 is about your own nails. In the wording Washington State adopted: "Food employees shall keep their fingernails trimmed, filed, and maintained so the edges and surfaces are cleanable and not rough."

Section 2-302.12 is about polish and artificial nails. Virginia's version reads: "Unless wearing intact gloves in good repair, a food employee shall not wear fingernail polish or artificial nails when working with exposed food."

Every state adopts the Food Code in its own way and on its own schedule, so the exact wording can differ slightly where you live. Your state or county health department publishes the version that applies to you.

Why the rule exists

There are two reasons. The first is cleanliness: bacteria collect under long or artificial nails, and they are harder to scrub clean than short natural nails. The second is physical: polish can chip and a nail can pop off, and nobody wants to find either in their food. A press-on is held on with an adhesive tab or glue, and even a well fitted set can lift at the edge when your hands are in water all day.

The glove exception, and why it rarely helps

On paper, the Food Code allows artificial nails if you wear intact gloves in good repair. In practice, that exception is narrow. Nail edges can tear gloves, gloves get changed constantly during a shift, and a torn glove means you are no longer following the rule. That is why many employers simply ban artificial nails and polish for everyone who works with food, whatever the gloves.

Your employer's dress code can be stricter than the law, and a health inspector will look at what is on your hands, not at what you meant to do. If you are not sure, ask your manager before your shift rather than during it.

Which jobs count as working with exposed food?

Exposed food means food that is not wrapped or packaged, so the rule clearly covers cooks, prep staff, bakers, sandwich makers and baristas. It often covers bartenders too, because garnishes and ice are food. Front of house roles are less clear: a host or a cashier who never touches food may be allowed to wear press-ons, while a server who plates desserts or cuts bread is not. The answer depends on what you actually do during a shift and on your employer's policy.

How to wear press-ons around a food service schedule

  • After your last shift of the week: clean your nails with an alcohol prep pad, pick the right size for each finger and press each nail on with an adhesive tab. It takes about ten minutes, with no lamp and no drying time.
  • On your days off: enjoy them. With adhesive tabs, a set can stay on for 1 to 2 weeks, so a long weekend or a vacation is no problem at all.
  • Before your next shift: soak your fingertips in warm water for a few minutes and lift the nails off gently. No acetone and no filing, so your own nails stay short and smooth, exactly the way the Food Code wants them.
  • Next time: keep the set in its box and wear it again with fresh adhesive tabs. Every set includes 150.

Short shapes such as Round or Square Short are the quickest to take on and off. For a natural look, try a nude like Cameo Nude; for a night out, a deep red such as Cherry Crush.

Why handmade sets in your size work better for this

If you take your nails on and off every week, fit matters more than anything. Drugstore boxes give you 24 to 30 nails in 10 to 15 sizes and leave you to find the ones that fit. Our sets are made by hand in soft gel in the size and shape you choose: 10 nails for your fingers plus 5 spares, all in your size. Measure the widest part of your nail before you order (our size chart shows you how), and if you are between two sizes, take the larger one; the sides file down easily. A set that fits well goes on fast and comes off cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

Can baristas wear press-on nails?

Baristas work with exposed food and drinks, so the Food Code rule applies. Many coffee shops do not allow artificial nails or polish behind the counter at all. Wear them on your days off.

Can I wear press-ons if I always wear gloves?

The Food Code allows it with intact gloves in good repair, but your employer may not, and a torn glove puts you out of line with the rule immediately. Check your employer's policy first.

Does the rule apply to nail polish too?

Yes. Section 2-302.12 covers fingernail polish as well as artificial nails, with the same glove exception.

Como medir a tua unha
